Yes. But i'm saying not believing in god is different than believing there is no god.

Or we can talk about alien abductions or reincarnation. A lot of people believe in these things. If you were to tell a believer that you don't believe in abductions or reincarnation they might react by saying, "but how do you know these things aren't happening? You can't prove it. Your belief that they are not happening is just like my belief that they are."

Hopefully when not talking about religion, you can see how ridiculous such a response is. Not believing in abductions is not equal to believing in them. One is a positive act and one is the absence of that positive act.
