Saddam never played well with the West. He played well with the Soviet Union, while it was in business, and did a little playing of both sides. Invading Iran was an enormous miscalculation on his part, there is no other way to describe it. But the US, and everybody else in the Gulf, took adantage of it to keep two such nasty and threatening regimes tied up fighting each other for as long as possible. Hardly a tribute to Saddam's astuteness, rather the contrary.
