John, Re: Unicom/ MSM6300 pricing discussion, and “You may be right in that this "GSM/GPRS" phone would have much fewer features than a CDMA1X multimedia phone. It would be like a low end CDMA phone.”

Here’s the deal. Its my understanding that Q’s production costs are under $10/chipset (before the markups) which would allow the Q to price it very competitively with any of the GSM stuff if it chose to do so. All indications are that’s the Q intent, and why not. I don’t know what kind of pricing arrangements the Q has worked out with the mfgs / carriers- perhaps some creative pricing to seed the market at various volumes / segment tiers, bundling with other equipment / services, etc.

The Q has been barred from competing in the dominate GSM markets since day one, and this is their first opportunity to take ‘em on big time (78 Million GSM subs). I believe this is what Dr. IMJ is waiting for, before he turns over the reins to someone else. Nothing would please the Q team more, which has had to fight and scramble at every level for survival against NOK and the GSMA cabal, than to “win this one for the Gipper “ (Dr. IMJ).

BTW, George Gilder revealed the other day that he’s writing to forward to Dave Mock’s new book on Qualcomm. GG says Mock’s book paints the Q as the “the world’s best technology company”.

Funny, someone who disparaged the Q at every opportunity now profits from Q’s success. Mock seems like a very nice chap and to his credit he never engaged in any verbal attacks in attempting to defend his positions.
