I think the problem with our oil dependency is that the only way to solve it is to tax the crap out of gasoline, and neither party is going to run on that ...

It is absolutely impossible to get elected by advocating an additional $1.50 a gallon on gasoline tax.

The oil companies and auto companies (and auto unions) would hammer whoever proposed that, as would joe six-pack.

Actually, the wakeup call on this was in the 70's. I remember getting chased down the street one night after getting caught siphoning gas so my buddies and I could go out partying on a Friday night.

And while I do agree the money in the oil trade is driving much of what we do, I think there are some in Congress who are willing to step up and try to put and end to that. I'll be paying attention to them.
