You are correct. I fear a double dip recession more than an increased national debt. As a result of the 2000 market crash, the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Government tried to avert a major economic collapse by both monetary and fiscal stimulus to the economy. As a result, this most recent recession was more shallow than previous recessions. Even so, the economy had 3 quarters of negative growth.

But if a Kerry Administration wants to raise taxes, to cover the deficit, that's up to them. The question they'll need to answer is, has the economy recovered enough, and strong enough that a tax increase won't throw the country into recession (remember, the U.S. economy was several years into a recovery, when Clinton raised taxes).
