Nadine, just how do you come up with this stuff? You think about what you wish I had said, and then as a matter of wish fulfillment you respond to my imagined post, rather than the one I actually made?

I usually refer to this as "straw man" argumentation, though that may not be quite the right term. A remarkably consistent technique, though.

It would be more accurate to say that the West managed to use Saddam, and use him for a long time, to curtail the mullahs of Iran. The Iran-Iraq war is not any kind of display piece for Saddam's astuteness. He started it, spent the lives of hundreds of thousands of men, gained absolutely nothing, and was only saved from outright defeat by the West which hated the mullahs worse than him.
