My understanding is the house generally keeps about half, the rest gets split between the production company and the distributor.

Whatever it sounds like to you, this is a high margin film for the filmmaker. Independent documentaries have limited SAG related expenses, royalties and marketing budgets. Moore's investors had fixed costs which were recovered the first days of theatrical release. He stands to make a bundle on it.
