One of the key factors behind the current Islamic upsurge has received virtually no coverage in the media. Back in the early 1990s Algerian Islamics won a free election and that collection was immediately nullified by the Algerian military with unanimous Western and especially French support. The consequence has been a brutal civil war with horrendous atrocities on all sides. The number of dead over the past decade has been reported in the hundreds of thousands. Just in case anybody still is naive enough to think that the US will ever permit genuinely free elections in Iraq.
