<<<What were they thinking, Mary? >>>

1. Some people thought there was a link to 9/11 and by going into Iraq we would stop terrorism. (BTW)William F. Buckley has recent come out and said that if he knew what we know now, he would not favor going to war.

2. There are some who believe oil is worth fighting for and Iraq had a lot of oil. Going into Iraq protected our vital interests.

3. There are some (beleive it or not) who are plain blood thirsty and look for a good fight. They romaticsize war. And here was a chance to indulge in this fantasy with a pretty good pretext. But, going to war is the real deal for these people. They will grasp on to anything for a pretext.

4. There are some who believed Iraq had WMD. They used it on their own people and will use it against Isreal and or the United States if a pre-emptive strike is not taken.

5. There are people who are very patriotic. If their President tell them we are going to war, they will fully support their President.

6. There are some who supported the war because they believed that it is our mission to spread democracy and that people would be better off with a democratic form of government than to live under a dictatorship.

7. There are some people who are not capable or do not wish to think for themselves.

8. There are no doubt other reasons why some people supported the war.

Of course, there are people who believed in more than one of the above.

And, of course, not all people who supported the war are bad people just as not all people who supported the war are good people.

<<< And how do you know? >>>

I'm guessing. Right now I tend to think my guess is as good as anyone's.

There are times you don't need rigorous proof. For instance, if you are in an elevator and it is falling - you don't have to be an elevator mechanic to know that something isn't working. You don't need proof.

In any case, some day down the road, we will have developed some form of language, more like mathematics, where there is far less ambiguity - and we will be able to prove everything to be right or wrong.
