Since when do the presence of military bases not signal a strong influence if not imperialism?

You must be listening to Moore-like kooks too much:

imperialism: The policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations.
dictionary.reference.com

Just of the top of my head, we have bases in UK, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea...

And aren't we the primary trading partner for most if not all these countries? Isn't that a form of economic hegemony?

If so, the above countries are very well established; by comparison, Iraq is a foundling. Imagine the economic and political influence we will have over Iraq......it will be formidable. Like I said, "imperialism"........maybe too strong a word. "A significant influence"......most definitely.
