tip, I'm an old liberal arts guy, but it shocks me at how little science today's kids are being taught. And history, fuhgetaboutit. I have actually seen young adults fluff easy history questions on tv quiz shows and give the excuse, "I wasn't even alive when that happened." Uh, since it happened in 1492, I would have been shocked if you had lived through it. <G>

"When you have no historical / cultural context for understanding present day events, it's pretty easy to become prey for the loudest voices on the TV."

Well put. I think our citizenry has the greatest fear of "others" of any significant nation, and it's a fear that's routinely exploited. My friend who said a couple weeks ago, "It won't be long before lots of people will welcome a police state" is one who's been whipsawed into submission already and welcomes the relief of his fear. His hero, btw, is the fair and mentally balanced O'Reilly.

" Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
