The joy of motorcycling Vancouver Sun Friday, July 02, 2004 CREDIT: Mark Van Manen, Vancouver Sun Sun reporter Larry Pynn hits the road on his Harley for a series of motorbike odysseys. British Columbia has gone to the Hogs. And then some. Be it custom Harleys, highway cruisers, screamin' crotch rockets, or urban scooters, more British Columbians are getting into motorcycling than ever before, fuelled in large part by a new wave of women riders and by babyboomers with money to burn. The Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council reports retail sales of new bikes, including parts and accessories, topped $1 billion in Canada last year, up from $573 million in 1999, virtually a doubling in five years. Motorcycle sales topped 11,000 in B.C. alone last year, up 163 per cent over the last decade. All of which brings us to veteran Vancouver Sun reporter Larry Pynn, 49. He got his first motorcycle, a new 50-cc Suzuki, at age 15 -- and proceeded to drive it straight into a barbed-wire fence on the family farm in Aldergrove. Over the next few years, he would acquire a fire-breathing 250-cc BSA and a reliable 350-cc Yamaha before giving the sport a rest for close to two decades. Then came Harley-Davidson's 100th anniversary, in 2003. Pynn seized the moment to purchase a new black 883-cc Sportster. Then he did something he should have done right after he hit that wire fence: he took a motorcycle driving course through the B.C. Safety Council. Now he's hitting the road -- this time for readers of The Sun. Starting today, Pynn launches his new column, Chrome and Leather, which will run for 10 consecutive weeks as the Daily Special on pages B2-B3 every Friday throughout the summer. Pynn will do his part to bridge the chasm of prejudice that divides Harley owners from the sport-bike crowd, going as far as to take a spin with local Vespa revivalists. If you have comments for Pynn as his column unfolds, please e-mail him at lpynn@png.canwest.com. © The Vancouver Sun 2004
