Please, please, let this put an end to the sniping that "Bush stole the election."

I'm not optimistic, however, since the mantra is firmly embedded in the minds of the party faithful.

Recounts were not the real problem. It was the voter roll scrubbing. Quit avoiding this issue. The new stories about it prove that Jeb and his GOP consulting firm scrubbed 57,700 voters off the rolls in 2000, thousands of them legal voters, most of them blacks and hispanics. The real crime is that they intentionally did not crosscheck the out of state ex-felon names so that anyone with a similar name and birthdate was taken off the rolls. It was a big dirty trick. They got caught, sued by the NAACP, settled out of court and are now being forced to hand over their new lists. Gore won the election if not for this cheating. Bush is an illegitimate president who does not deserve re-election unless you want to reward cheating and lying.
