I hear you, but that guy might want to think about doing one of two things. Either he should learn the new language or he should get into management. I used to code myself and I learned that once you know the basics, you can pick up other languages. It's not easy, but it's doable. The alternative is to manage those folks, which is what I did.

The world gets faster and faster and it's adapt or lose out. I know that's harsh, but that's reality.

You know what's funny? In the heyday of the 90's, everyone was looking for the next whizkid that was going to make the company revenues explode. Now companies are looking for the greyhairs. I know, because I'm now in the consulting business and companies ask for EXPERIENCE. They know they can get it for cheap and they don't want the snot nose kid who needs OJT. They want the guy that's been around the block a few times and doesn't make rookie mistakes.

So my advice to the greyhair is not to despair, but get in the game and compete and never quit learning. Life's more fun if you're always learning something new anyway.
