President Bush, seeking to mobilize religious conservatives for his reelection campaign, has asked church-going volunteers to turn over church membership directories, campaign officials said on Thursday.

Has any candidate, Democrat or Republican, ever before done the above?

Sure they all address groups (Repubs do too, of course) and make contributions to a church or civic group (Repubs do too, of course) but has any President of the United States ever asked church-going volunteers to turn over membership directories?

All politicians do what's called "outreach" to church and other groups. You think Republicans don't do the same? Bush himself has promised to address Muslim concerns on domestic and foreign policy issues (this is of course a promissory note, a quid pro quo for support), and some polls say Bush is ahead with Muslim voters. I'm not criticizing this, I'm saying What else is new?

And what else is new is this: "President Bush...has asked church-going volunteers to turn over church membership directories."

I see that you are unable to comprehend the implications and unprecedentedness of this act on part of a President of the United States, but fortunately many Republican religious leaders and ethicists are able to, and are appalled at Bush's desperate act.

Check my next post.

Am I missing something? When the Democrats go after blacks, where they believe a large percentage supports them, little is said.

Yet when a Republican attempts to do the equivalent, it's a violation of the Constitution.

Why is racism more acceptable than seeking support from members of religious groups?
