It seems to me that the fundamentalists have edged out the 'western Republicans', the wing of the Party that moved into power with Reagan... and emphasized smaller, less intrusive government.

IMO, much of the fundamentalist agenda REQUIRES a Bigger Government, a 'Big Daddy government', to tell people what they can do, to further regulate their lives... and to export that agenda around the world.
