I think Algeria is a pertinent comparison. Now in 1995 time frame, that country looked like a basket case, with Islamists cutting the heads off school children even. Where are they now ? They certainly didn't accomplish much of anything of lasting value.

Based on Algeria, we shouldn't expect any overnight results in Iraq either, but long term these so called "insurgents" won't win in Iraq either. Enough will eventually be killed off, just as in Algeria for it to die down.
