I entered the service in 1981 and served with people who were drafted and some who volunteered in the 1970's. Many of those people were not of the desired quality and technical capability. Reagan changed many things when he was elected for the better. By the time I left in 1987 the situation was dramatically different. But I dont know what has happened over the last 17 years.

The draft would be a desperate measure, you cant force patriotism. But perhaps you can entice more people to do the right thing with a more adequate reward for the risk of volunteering. I dont think we are doing enough to do that before calling for a draft.

I respect your thoughtful opinion, but would like to point out a few things.

You did not enter the service in 1981 and serve with draftees. The last draftee was inducted in 1973. The last draftee was discharged the day before Thanksgiving in 1975.
The all volunteer US Army began that weekend.
At that time, I had over six years overseas duty and was a Company Commander. I recall much of the brief speech I gave to my men and their incredible response.

Today we have civilians in Iraq and military personal as well. I venture to say the risk premiums being paid to civilians are higher than the entire salary of a military enlistee.

You are right and any former Green Beret can start anytime he wants at $180,000 per year or more. But that is hardly the skill level of a typical military private. Some are highly paid and are very effective. Some are paid very well and are not effective at all.

How much do you think we should pay Army Privates? And do you think $$$ will increase the skill and intelligence level of enlistees?

How much are you willing to pay for your lifestyle? Do you think your freedoms were bought by dollars? Do you believe they can be preserved by dollars?
