Gephardt is indeed a bore, but he provides two things that may very well make an enormous difference: He is well known in the Midwest where the battles that matter are going to be fought and he is safe, i.e., he will not do something dumb, won't open his mouth inappropriately, will follow direction, is a known quantity, and won't steal Kerry's thunder. I thought for some time that Hillary would be the one. From a purely political standpoint, it would be the smart thing to do, but she doesn't provide the kind of security that I think Kerry wants.
