If you want to reinvent the wheel to suit yourself, have at it. I am not beguiled by the notion that this is about me. I operate just fine within the current system. It is adaptable to a wide variety of work-arounds to suit various needs and preferences including mine. I have no personal investment whatsoever in changing the system. You're not talking about what "is", you're talking about what "should be," In your opinion. Indeed. We got into this discussion with LB saying it's about the kids, which is the way he has apparently chosen to rationalize his objection to gay marriage. Our current system is not optimized for kids. If as LB asserts, it should be, then the system is flawed. When I see a flawed system, I do what I did for thirty years--the old war horse just can't help noodling. I understand that society is not interested in straying from the status quo even as an academic exercise.
