So UW, what is the problem then are you saying that many of the volunteers are not smart enough to operate and maintain the equipment that the Army uses?

You did not answer my question about how much training a typical recruit get before boots on the ground in Iraq.

Let's take the last question first. An Army soldier gets 8 weeks of basic training, 8 weeks of advanced individual training, and a minimum of another 8 weeks of unit training before deploying into a war zone. After Korea, Congress mandated that our servicemen receive a minimum of 6 months training before going to war. I believe that law is still in effect.

As far as your first question...let me answer it this way.
Those volunteers who meet the current Army standards for enlistment are definitely smart enough to do the jobs and do them well.
The debate position I have taken is that those standards should not be lowered without expecting a significant reduction in our combat effectiveness and an accompanying significant increase in friendly casualties.
We are not inventing a new wheel with this. It has been tried before. Our US Military history says I am right.
