I don't think there is too much of a NIMBY factor involved in the proposed LNG terminal. I must admit I am not sure if there was government money involved in building Canaport oil terminal. That was about 1969 I think. Recently, Irving received $50 million from the Federal Government to assist in closing the Irving shipbuilding plant in Saint John. Irving owns other shipbuilding operations but Saint John would love to build LNG tankers there and the facilities are still there from the Canadian Frigate program. Often new Irving ventures seem to involve
some sort of government assistance or loan guarantees. In the last few years the Federal Liberal government was involved in a widely publicised affair which involved federal cabinet ministers visiting the secretive Irving fishing lodge. Years ago when K. C. Irving lived in New Brunswick it was said that the New Brunswick government couldn't buy a roll of toilet paper without Irving's permission. Times have changed but to a degree, New Brunswick remains "the largest company town in the world".

For more information on Irving, you might want to visit the Irving tread I started a few years ago.

Irving of course is private but most people familiar with the companies are always on the alert for potential public offerings of some of the estimated 300+ companies.
