They liked to think that the Gipper was dumb too. Only he was an honor roll student in both high school and college, a respected president of the Screen Actors Guild, and his own speechwriter for much of his early career. He was the intelligence officer for the Army film unit in Hollywood, during World War II, and acting base commander for a period of time, with glowing fitness reports. And he was a very successful governor.
