In the same time period, the first "Spider-Man" had pulled in $144.2 million, although comparisons with that 2002 movie are difficult since it opened on the Friday of a nonholiday weekend in early May, while the sequel launched last Wednesday to get an early start on the July 4 holiday. The new film sets a new record for a six-day opening, beating the opening stanza of $146.9 million set by "The Matrix Reloaded" last year. For the three-day period from Friday to Sunday, "Spider-Man 2" earned $88.3 million. By contrast, "Spider-Man" opened with a record-breaking $114.8 million in its first three-day weekend. For the new film, sales from the Monday holiday drove its four-day haul to an estimated $115.8 million. The critically acclaimed $200 million sequel reunites actors Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst with director Sam Raimi. It was released by Columbia Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp. (Tokyo:6758.T - News; NYSE:SNE - News) in association with comic-book company Marvel Enterprises Inc. (NYSE:MVL - News), which owns the rights to Spider-Man and a stable of superheroes. Last weekend's champion, "Fahrenheit 9/11" slipped to No. 2 with a four-day haul of $21 million, taking its total to $60.1 million. Michael Moore's controversial polemic about President George W. Bush was released by Lions Gate Films, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp (AMEX:LGF - News; Toronto:LGF.TO - News), and by IFC Films, a unit of Cablevision Systems Corp's (NYSE:CVC - News) Rainbow Media Holdings.
