Al-Jazeera TV Says U.S. Marine in Iraq Released, CNN, AFP Say

July 5 (Bloomberg) -- Arab television channel al-Jazeera said a U.S. Marine being held hostage in Iraq was released today, only days after he was reportedly beheaded, Cable News Network and Agence France-Presse said.

Al-Jazeera cited a statement from the Islamic Retaliation Movement, a militant group, concerning Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun. The statement said the Lebanese-born Marine was ``returned to his safe base,'' AFP said. CNN reported that al- Jazeera, citing the Islamic group, said Hassoun has promised he won't return to the U.S. military.

On Saturday, the U.S. military said it was investigating media reports that an Iraqi militant group beheaded Hassoun, who was captured last month. The militant group, the Ansar al-Sunna Army, had claimed on an Islamic Web site that Hassoun, 24, was dead, the Associated Press reported last week.
