Like I said there are only 4 million NRA members. The only murder committed with a machine gun was a police officer. Less than 1% of violent crimes were ever committed with rifles with baynut lugs and flash suppressors. There is no relationship between people with clean records and violent crime committed by street gangs. Nobody recovered the rifles to verify whether police (the 20% number) were killed by rifles with bayonet lugs and flash hiders...instead the study just ASSUMED that the rifles had those military features (unrelated to fire power). Since the weapons were never recovered they could have been bolt action rifles. Hunting rifles have more power than semi-autos that have an intermediate sized cartridge between the power of a pistol and a hunting rifle.

There are now concealed carry laws in 46 States now. The cops appreciate those who at their own risk and for no pay augment the police forces of today in emergency situations like when some nutcase with a criminal felonious records steals a gun from somebody's locked cabinet and then goes on a shooting spree. The police are not always there to euthanize such crazies. The requirements for getting a concealed carry permit are up there and mimic police academy training. IMO such people should not only be trusted with concealed carry they should be entrusted with assault weapons and fully automatic weapons. Concealed carry nutcases are so rare that 46 States have recognized their value.
