09 Jul 2004 09:22 GMT ECB Trichet: Econ Outlook In Line With Price Stability -3
Trichet also said that although the ECB's preferred scenario was centered around the strengthening of the euro-zone's recovery, risks remained "in both directions."

On the upside, he said, growth in the first quarter was stronger than anticipated, "and this momentum may strengthen short-term dynamics."

On the down side, Trichet warned, oil prices "remain at high levels and may dampen growth, mainly through their impact on the euro area's terms of trade."

Trichet said that after recent oil price hikes, the risks of second-round inflationary effects via wage and pricing trends needed "to be monitored closely."

Furthermore, he added, monetary analysis seems to show that "the stock of excess liquidity, if it persists, may pose an upside risk to price stability over the medium term." Trichet said this supported the case for "continued vigilance."
