McCarthy was wrong not because the Communist Party was not a threat, but because he did not fairly look into the matter, but made reckless and unsubstantiated charges. The Cold War lasted well past any bubble of hysteria, and was fought by both Republican and Democratic presidents, from Harry Truman through George Bush. It was essentially won by Ronald Reagan, but it was supported by both liberals and conservatives, from both parties, through the policy of containment. In fact, at the time, when he was president of the Screen Actors Guild, he was still a liberal Democrat, and some Democrats in Hollywood thought he should run for Congress. He did not change his party affiliation until the '60s...........
