In my view, the keystone of what it is to be human is the ability for rational thought. If you suspend that capability, for whatever reason, you have diminished yourself. In no way should that be taken as an argument against religion. Much in religious teaching is supremely logical. It is also clear that all of us are still animals, and subject to the control of emotions, although I believe that emotions, for the most part, are caused by a conflict with or an affirmation of our core values when they encounter reality.
