Kirk,

Yes, the 5 and 10d sma's for arms are a good way to smooth the original data....
Richard Arms in his book "Trading Without Fear" clearly states their value and he uses them with the 21d for timing short to intermediate spans.

Also, Arms uses 100 and 300 dmas for extremely long periods.
