Possibly a bigger McCain negative (should he ever get tapped for replacement VP) is his involvement with the "Keating Five" S&L scandal.



It is amazing to me how McCain was able to walk away from that one with a white robe. He was taking with both hands, and delivering for the payoff.

But I don't think it would stick now. He did a big "mea culpa" and is considered clean.

I think the biggest McCain negative for the dems was that he is a very serious Republican. I can't imagine that would work in a Dem administration. And the social conservatives would never permit Bush to put him on the Rep ticket. Nor would they let him get close to the nomination in 08. So he finishes his political life in the Senate.
