Nobody really knows what Putin has in mind other than it looks like he's going to grab control here and soon. Liquidity is drying up in Russia as everybody appears to be rushing for the exits.

Next couple weeks should be interesting!

Putin and Russia would also get more influence over politically powerful oil companies in the West, like XOM.

XOM would make a lot of profit, western consumers would get cheap oil, and Russia gets a free hand in Checneay, maybe georgia, Azerbijian. Also looser controls on technology sales to Russia.

Maybe Russia can provide better opportunities than offshore West Africa, Really DEEP -DEEP US Gulf, etc. Also better than expanding Alberta tar sands operations. Forestalling or delaying projects in those areas will mean the Russians have more leverage.

Russia is builing a LARGE gas pipeline to Europe. This buys influence, brings in cash, becomes a de facto non-agression pact.

Right now I'm happier with the Russians than most of the Arabs, so this is a good deal.
