Iraq was only "ripe for settlement" if you believe it was ripe. It's a matter of belief, not fact.

Changing the dynamic of the ME? Well sure- but in unknown ways. It's not as if we have great prognosticators in Washington, or on this thread, for that matter. Rather than relieving stress on the Saudis, a wave of terrorism seems to be washing their country- hmmm- do you think it unrelated to the Iraq occupation? Now, I do agree we were removing a threat to Israel- but is that really the business of America? No. The business of America is primarily removing threats to the US, and until we removed Saddam, there is no evidence that Saddam's country was funding terrorists targeting the US. Now, I suppose, there is more chance that Iraq will be doing such funding, too bad, isn't it?

We are not in the business of declaring wars on countries in order to force them to be democratic- at least I hope we aren't in that business, because aside from being really hypocritical, I can't see any reason why anyone would think it would work. I think Iraq will galvanize the region all right, just not in the direction the US might hope for.
