As was stated in an earlier post by GV, hydrogen will be gleaned from natural gas. My point was that it would be less expensive (and would conserve more energy) if the vehicle simply burned the natural gas instead of expending the money and energy to extract hydrogen from the NG.

Do you think we have a limitless supply of NG?

Holding out hydrogen or NG as an alternative to oil to create "oil independence" or to eliminate the "need to continue pumping money and military into the Middle East" assumes just that.

Decent mass transportation (read: decent enough and convenient enough that people will use it), rolled out nationally would serve this goal more effectively and efficiently.

But that wasn't the point of my post. I was merely pointing to the inefficiency of deriving hydrogen from natural gas compared to burning NG directly.
