Iraq is closer to sovereignty now than it was last month -- but with 145,000 foreign troops on its soil, limited legitimacy and a team of 1000 US "diplomats" at the US embassy running the show in the background, it is hard to get very excited about Iraqi sovereignty. Lets be clear about this -- Iraq can do only what the US allows Iraq to do. If US troops leave Iraq years from now we might once again see a real sovereign and free Iraq. For now, we have a country with a weak government backed by the US facing an insurgency that claims to be fighting a war of liberation against US military occupation -- same situation as a month ago. The veneer is much better than before -- but the wood beneath the surface is as rotten as ever.
