It was just so patently unserious and frivolous. There were other jokes told too that were in questionable taste and/or just delivered badly. When clinton picked gore in 92(brilliant pick btw) they were serious when then hit the ground running. With Tashmina tugging on the mike, with kerry joking and then edwards going into his trial lawyer two americas modes, you could see potential cracks developing down the road. Just so you know, i thought gephardt would be the better choice for the long haul but kerry might have screwed that up with "boring" jokes instead of "hair" jokes. mike

I gladly concede the better hair to Kerry/Edwards any day of the week.

To me, it was just emblematic of Kerry main problem as a campaigneer - he is utterly charmless, and his jokes are lame. The original JFK could have made a joke about hair (though I think he had the taste not to) that was actually funny. Not Kerry.
