What else do you need to establish his penchant for taking enormously stupid risks? What he actually did was convincing enough. Given his history, why do you think he was likely to become an altar boy?

If you think a proper goal of our foreign policy and a proper use of our military, with the probable loss of American lives which that entails, is to make the leaders of other nations "alter boys," or to assure that they act in ways which we see as "sane," then you're right.

Otherwise, you ought to look at what is in our national interests and, beyond that, at what the world wishes to impose on other nations as standards of behavior that the world will not tolerate. In those instances where intolerable behavior is bilaterally determined to exist, the world will help us remedy the situation.

But please don't attempt to justify actions which we stupidly thought were in our interests, only to discover otherwise, by saying that we had altruistic motives. No one believes that other than the choir, and it only makes us look more stupid and more hypocritical.
