re:"t does not specify that, although there was periodic military action taken. But that is beside the point. Clearly, the situation was evolving in the direction where direct military action had to be considered as a option. "

Military action was taken quite regularly, but never an invasion. We already controlled about 2/3 of the country via the no fly zones and the Kurds. There wasn't a truck that moved there that we didn't know about. We struck any target we wanted at will using the self defense reason (e.g.,they locked their radar on us) and no one objected.
Saddam was not suicidal and continually denied having WMD. All the weapons inspectors agreed there were no WMD....Bush wouldn't even give Blix an extra 2 weeks that he asked for.

And you're probably right about contingency plans by Clinton...But more importantly, from all the testimony we
have now heard, he was also very aware of the danger from Al Quaeda whom Bush ignored.

The bottom line is.....no matter what folks have said, vis-a-vis Saddam in the past, only one guy invaded a sovereign nation pre-emptively and that man is George W. Bush. If things were going well, you would not be trying to share the credit the way you're trying to share the blame for the fiasco....

What was evolving that necessitated direct military action, ie invasion??
