Yes- there are lots of non-NEA people- none of the parents on the panel belong to the NEA, and none of the non-certificated staff belong to the NEA. Actually the NEA people- the teachers on the panel (in our district), are in the minority- I wasn't even a member myself last year, but all the NEA bashing on SI convinced me to join, even though I don't agree with the NEA on everything- and specifically tenure, which I find hard to justify. On our school board there are no members of the NEA. I am fascinated that you would take the word of one teacher (most probably an NEA member) without being given any facts to back it up. I doubt your school board is made up of NEA people either- and the school board gives the Yay or Nay on what classes schools have, and what their descriptions (curriculum) consist of- including in our district, approved texts and literature books.

In our district American history has been the same for years- in terms of the time spent on it- a full year. The points covered may change, and they varied from teacher to teacher- but there is less variation now due to standards.

If you ever get any facts on the NEA actually eliminating history classes, let me know.

Hi KLP,

Please take the NEA discussion elsewhere. Thank you.
