I will not deny that the Revolutionary War was "elective", and that men of goodwill could differ on whether it should be waged. I agree with DeToqueville, however, that it was, in the end, a democratic revolution, although it was certainly of imperfect character, and that it represented the avant- garde of humanity's search for a better political society. Although the British provided a primitive model, America was a big advance in the creation of responsible government, civil liberties,relative social equality (independent of birth or title), and the idea of meritocracy.

Anyway, I enjoyed it, too.
