Well said. I worry about America and Americans. We are thankfully big enough and strong enough to accomodate thinking like yours. God help us should your kind of thinking ever predominate.

I worry about America and Americans, too- I hope you realize you do not have a monopoly on that, nor is your opinion of how to do things necessarily the best for America. Obviously you assume that it is, but I'm not sure you have any doubts about your position, which is troubling. Your entire argument about Saddam seems to depend- as you have expressed your argument- on his irrationality and unpredictability. If he was not irrational and unpredictable, then your argument falls apart. I fail to see how that is crazy. I think he probably was predictable, if we had spent some time trying to understand him better- but we were giving short shrift to that part of the world at the time- hence Glaspie's relative nonchalance about the whole situation. And yes, THEIR country is in the path of our vital interest (that's super humanitarian isn't it? I am sure the ME feels the love...), but only because we are too short sighted to develop alternative energy. You talk about our economic security as it regards invading their country so blithely...one might almost think the US had a manifest destiny, anywhere in the world it's vital interests are at stake (vital being whatever other countries have, that we need)...
