In the case of the Iraqis, unless the US has death camps in store for them they're wasting their time. The reason why they are fighting is because they believe that in a power vacuum they have a real shot at the brass ring of obtaining money and power through the process. The insurgent leaders believe that if they keep it up, they will win a portion of Iraq with power over that region or they will be invited into the political process or make a name for themselves for upcoming elections. Its about money and power money and power. Thats what the insurgents want. The US is preventing them from that so they attack US troops. The insurgents had hoped that the US would topped Saddam and then leave allowing the next brutal leaders to arrise and build their own palaces and use oil proceeds for their own purposes. Fortunately the insurgents have absolutely noting positive to offer Iraqis.
