Interesting point. I can't remember when I took a party platform seriously. Seems to me the platform fights in the 60s meant a great deal; I don't recall paying too much attention to them after McGovern in 72.

There is, of course, a loonier version of right wing politics than Tom DeLay. It's best pictured in the Texas Republican Party platform. I don't have a link right here but it made the rounds of some of the blogs a couple of months ago. Talk about turning the clock back.

No doubt that platform will not appear in the national one.
