We disagree, of course, on whether the future threat posed by Saddam was worth the trouble of getting rid of him.

The future is always uncertain. And there are risks involved in any course we pursue even doing nothing.

People who opposed removing Saddam's government also had hopes, I think - for example, the hope that some unknown element would remove him from the scene, or the hope that he would be "well-behaved" in the community of nations in the future.
