We have one Marine who has some explaining to do.
The only reasonable way to get to Lebanon from Iraq is to cross the country of Syria.

He may have a good explanation. And I hope he does. We should give him every single little bit of the doubt for now.

This brings back memories of the capture of McClure, Smith, Roraback and Comacho in late October 63. I was in the same company with them since the Cuban crisis the year before. B Co, 5th SFGA. The day they were captured I was on a bus to NYC to catch a boat to Germany and Berlin. I had been living in the same squad bay with Smith and McClure.

While in a captured status, Smitty and George McClure made some comments deemed unfriendly about the war...but it saved their lives. They had it very rough with the press and the military after release. Ken Roraback was later assassinated and Ike Comacho escaped. Ken's brother completed a career in SF.

If I remeber right, Nick Rowe (escaped 68?)(assassinated in Philippines), Versace (MOH), and Pitzer(released 67?) were captured the same day.

Today our troops do have more freedom to speak if they believe their life is threatened. I have never seen anyone write about this (I have considered it.)...but I attribute the changes to Smittie and George's release and Roraback's assassination.

By Alan

An update on the threats to Hussein’s attorneys, this time from Al-Bawaba: Masked gunmen threatened on Thursday in a videotaped message to behead any lawyers defending ousted Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein.“Saif al-Allah (The Sword of God) group, belonging to the Islamic Jihad, warns all those who defend the criminal case of the cowardly criminal Saddam…that we will sever your necks before you arrive,” one gunman stated. The gunman, from a previously unknown group, said in the tape given to Reuters that the warning was for “the Iraqi, Arab and foreign lawyers who have taken on the case of the criminal Saddam.” “We will sentence you with cutting off your heads,” one of the gunmen said, as they all drew out long glistening blades....
