Japan was and has no reason to fear India or Pakistan. It does have reason to be concerned with China and N Korea and might go nuclear due to N Korea. India and Pakistan will just be a blip.

US doesn't have to fear India as both countries are strong democracies (with a strong tolerance for diversity) actively trading with each other. US just needs to be carefull not to rile up India by setting up bases around India (very sensitive issue) or continue with massive aid to Pakistan, or try to arm twist India to join wars (that will create a definitive backlash) and India should not try to fuck up either. There are so many things in common that it is a shame that the two counrties did not share good relations till recently.

Another thing that could sour relations with India is the support of evangelicals from US for "forced conversions" to Christianity. Even moderates in India, while they have a big tolerance for other religions, are usually against conversions.

If things DO go wrong with India or Pakistan, those two countries cannot be invaded by United States. Both of them are now too strong for that. The war will be totally different than what we saw in Iraq.

US does have to fear Pakistan bombs easily and willfully being doled out to terrorists for use against it's interests.

When you look at Pakistan, you have to remember that the government there seems to change most often by coup. there has been two attempts on Musharraf's life this year. So, your really dealing with a volitale unknown. As a Moslem country, it could easily go radical. Then, you'd have a radical nuclear power aligned with the terrorists. To me, that's much more threatening than Iraq ever was.
