1/3Mp converted to 17MP and then converted back down again ... do you get any sense that you are no longer really dealing with 640x480 as a medium?

No. I start with lemons, and end up with lemonade, no matter what. How I get to lemonade doesn't concern me, except for the end result. In any case, as far as the web is concerned, the eyemods end up very close to where they started, they just seem to look smoother, to me.

If you scale back only to a size and resolution which would be suitable for a book and print it, what do you think of the image then?

I LOVE the results I'm getting on paper, all the way up to 3x4 feet. For the book, I'll do what I just did for the web: interpolate up to 12x16 inches, downsize to book size. The results should be lovely. I think so, anyway. (g)
