One thing that stands out to me looking at GDP growth vs debt growth since 1990 is that during Bush Sr and Jr years debt grew at a faster rate than GDP.

1990 -258.68 Billion
1991 -441.59 Billion
1992 -150.52 Billion

2001 -135.28 Billion
2002 -126.98 Billion
2003 -190.29 Billion

An argument could be made that they were trying to run this country in to the ground.
