"Can anyone contemplate the prospect of taking our leave of this century with the greatest defensive alliance in history in tatters after losing a war in Europe?" ... >>>

Someone is thinking too hard and overanalyzing things.

That "someone" is John McCain, who almost became running-mate to our "liberal" presidential candidate.

. For one, that is exactly what bush and company has done, perhaps unwittingly, probably carelessly...that is nearly left nato in tatters over iraq. Can anyone imagine that Europe is anything but scared crapless after the recent flexing of muscles on the part of bush and his administration...and can anyone imagine that this display of military unilateralism will result in anything but a buttressing of military indipendence and power on the part of Europeans?

That's what I love about Bush. He has done serious damage to American imperialism by bringing it out in the open.
