I can relate to Kerry's, "I just haven't had time." While I was on the phone today raising campaign funds for Kerry, the house next door caught on fire and burned to the ground. I saw it start from the beginning, but just didn't have the time to call 911. After it was reduced to charcoal, the fire crew arrived and the captain rang my bell and asked whether I'd noticed smoke. "Yes," I replied, "It started really slowly, and smoked for awhile before it began to blaze. I would have called 911, but I just didn't have the time. I was busy fundraising for Kerry." The fire captain replied, "Yes, I understand. Here's $10.00 for Kerry. Your neighbors can always buy a new house, but Kerry can't replace the money you would have foregone if you'd stopped to call the fire department. You just didn't have the time. You're a hero, and your neighbors should be grateful for your diligence and public service."
